What PTA tax is
Every phone brought into Pakistan carries a registration fee. The rate depends on the handset's value and lands somewhere around 17–32%. Registering against a CNIC and against a passport are charged differently.
To see your own figure, dial *8484# or enter the IMEI on the PTA's own site.
The case for paying it
Once registered, the handset is fully local: a Pakistani number, calls, SMS, and any local SIM you like. If this is your daily phone and people call you on that number, registration is the right answer.
It is also a one-off. Pay it once and it lasts as long as the handset does.
The case for an eSIM
If the phone is only ever going to be an internet device — a second handset, a tablet, an old phone you kept — registration buys you things you will not use. A data eSIM starts at Rs. 380 and works immediately.
It carries no calls and no SMS. The decision comes down to one question: do you need a number, or do you need the internet?
Side by side
- PTA registration: one large payment, calls and SMS included, gives you a number, takes a few days.
- Data eSIM: small payment, internet only, no number, working in two minutes.
Plenty of people do both — an older registered phone for calls, and a newer non-PTA handset on an eSIM for data.
Common questions
Does an eSIM let me avoid PTA tax?
No, and it is not a way around it. They are different things: registration governs local SIMs, an eSIM is roaming data. If you want a Pakistani number, the tax still applies.
How much is PTA tax exactly?
It depends on the model and its declared value — roughly 17–32%. Dial *8484# to get the figure for your own handset.
