The short answer: yes, on roaming
A foreign SIM works in Pakistan when your operator has roaming arrangements here and roaming is switched on for your line. That is common among the large UK, UAE and Saudi operators — but confirm Pakistan roaming in your operator's app or website before you fly.
No PTA registration is needed. PTA's 60-day DIRBS block applies to Pakistani SIM subscriptions; a foreign SIM on roaming is not a Pakistani operator's customer, so the block does not reach it. That is also why a UK SIM roams fine in a non-PTA iPhone.
The real question is the cost
Roaming charges depend on your operator and plan. Pakistan is usually outside foreign operators' cheapest roaming zones — some plans offer a daily roaming pass, others charge per megabyte. Check the Pakistan rate on your plan.
What pushes the bill up:
- Mobile data without a package
- Video calls
- Apps using data in the background — backups, updates, photo sync
That is why most people switch Data Roaming off on the foreign line and take their internet from somewhere cheaper.
Keep your foreign number alive — for OTPs
This is an overseas Pakistani's biggest need: the UK or UAE bank's OTP, which arrives by SMS on the foreign number. So keep the foreign SIM in the phone.
- Turn Data Roaming off on the foreign line, so it runs up no data charges
- Let SMS arrive — many operators do not charge for incoming SMS while roaming, but confirm with yours
- Incoming ordinary calls may be charged as roaming — talk to family on WhatsApp instead
- Use a second line — a Pakistani data eSIM — for the internet
This needs a phone with two lines: a physical SIM and an eSIM. Most recent phones can do it.
Three routes in one table
| Foreign SIM (roaming) | Pakistani data eSIM | Pakistani SIM + PTA registration | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Your operator's roaming rate | The data only | SIM and bundle cheap; registration free |
| Pakistani number | No | No | Yes |
| PTA registration | Not needed | Not needed | Needed — temporary, 120 days, free |
| Works from day one | Yes | Yes, on landing | No — form and franchise first |
| Foreign number (OTP) | Yes, same SIM | Yes — the foreign SIM stays in | With dual SIM, yes |
Need a Pakistani SIM? Overseas Pakistani SIMs and PTA
If you are staying a long time, or need a Pakistani number — for JazzCash, Easypaisa or a bank — get a Pakistani SIM. Overseas Pakistanis can get one on their CNIC or NICOP at any operator's franchise, with a fingerprint check.
A phone brought from abroad works on a Pakistani SIM for 60 days. To stay longer, apply for PTA's temporary registration — 120 days, free, on every visit.
Buying a Pakistani data eSIM from abroad
The eJurs eSIM runs on Jazz's network and starts at Rs. 380. Checkout needs a Pakistani WhatsApp number (the QR is sent there) and payment in rupees. We take JazzCash and Easypaisa.
If your own Pakistani WhatsApp number is active, use it — the QR and order messages go there. If not, a relative in Pakistan can buy it on their own number and forward you the QR; order messages then go to them. Install the QR while still in the UK or Dubai, on your home Wi-Fi. Validity starts the first time you use data — when you land in Pakistan and switch the line on.
Which route suits whom
- A two or three week visit, internet only: a Pakistani data eSIM, with the foreign SIM left in for OTPs
- A stay of months, with a Pakistani number: a Pakistani SIM and PTA's temporary registration
- Your operator has a cheap Pakistan pack: the foreign SIM alone may be enough — check the rate
Common questions
Does a UK SIM work in Pakistan?
Yes, if your operator has roaming in Pakistan and roaming is on for your line. The cost is your operator's roaming rate — check it before you fly.
Will a Dubai (UAE) SIM work in Pakistan?
Yes, on roaming, if your operator offers Pakistan roaming and it is on for your line. Check the rate in your operator's app or website.
Will a Saudi SIM work in Pakistan?
Yes, with roaming on. Saudi operators also sell Pakistan roaming packages; ask yours for the rate and the package.
Will a UK SIM work in a non-PTA iPhone in Pakistan?
Yes, on roaming. PTA's 60-day block applies to Pakistani SIM subscriptions, not to a roaming SIM. You pay roaming charges.
How do I keep my foreign number for OTPs?
Leave the foreign SIM in the phone and switch Data Roaming off on that line. SMS keeps arriving; take your internet from a Pakistani data eSIM. Confirm SMS charges with your operator.
Do overseas Pakistanis need PTA registration?
Only to use a Pakistani SIM in a phone from abroad for more than 60 days. For that there is PTA's temporary registration — 120 days, free. A roaming SIM or a data eSIM needs no registration.
How do I buy a Pakistani eSIM from the UK?
Checkout needs a Pakistani WhatsApp number and payment in rupees. Use your own if it is active; if not, a relative in Pakistan can buy it on their own number and forward the QR. You can install the QR before you leave.
