WhatsApp calling in the UAE — the honest answer
This is the question every Pakistani asks before flying to Dubai, and it deserves a straight answer.
The UAE licenses internet calling. On domestic networks — Etisalat and du — WhatsApp, Messenger and FaceTime voice and video calls are blocked. Only licensed apps such as BOTIM work. That is UAE law, not a company policy.
This eSIM is a roaming profile, and some travellers have found WhatsApp calling works on eSIMs like it. But it is not reliable — we do not promise it will work, and it can stop at any time.
If calling home is the most important part of your trip, install BOTIM before you fly — it is licensed in the UAE, so it is the dependable choice for calls. WhatsApp messages, photos and voice notes work normally.
The first thirty minutes at Dubai airport
The stretch just after immigration at DXB is when you need data most, and it is exactly when most travellers are offline.
- Booking a Careem or Uber — neither works without a connection, and the taxi rank is long.
- Finding your hotel address and booking confirmation, which are in an email or on WhatsApp.
- Telling your family you've landed.
- Dubai Metro maps and Nol card information.
There is free airport Wi-Fi, but everyone in the terminal is on it, and at peak hours it crawls. An eSIM is already connected the moment you turn off airplane mode.
Coverage across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and beyond
This eSIM runs on du, one of the UAE's two major operators, with 4G and 5G across the urban areas of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman.
In practice that means signal at Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa, the Marina, Deira, Bur Dubai, Global Village, inside the Metro — stations and tunnels — and along the Abu Dhabi Corniche.
The full Sheikh Zayed Road run between Dubai and Abu Dhabi is covered. If you head out to a desert safari camp, expect weaker signal once you are well away from the city; that happens on every network, because there are simply fewer towers out there.
Why a UAE local SIM is harder than it sounds
Tourist SIMs exist in the UAE, but two things are worth weighing.
First, registration. The UAE takes SIM registration seriously — passport, and often Emirates ID or visa details. It is possible on a visit visa, but it takes time.
Second, your own number. Fitting a local SIM usually means taking your Pakistani SIM out (if the phone has one SIM slot), after which texts from home and bank OTPs stop reaching you. Losing OTPs while shopping in Dubai is a genuine problem, not a theoretical one.
And a third point people often miss: WhatsApp calling stays blocked on a local UAE SIM, because that is a domestic network. A local SIM does not solve that problem.
On a visit visa — 30 days or 60
UAE visit visas usually run 30 or 60 days, and many Pakistanis go to Dubai on one — to see family, to look for work, or for an interview. Check the current visa rules with your travel agent or airline.
That is why our 10 GB plan runs 60 days rather than 30 — the Visit Visa Pack. On a 60-day visa, one eSIM covers the whole stay with no recharge in the middle.
One point for job seekers: interview calls, sending a CV on WhatsApp and finding new offices on Maps all need data from day one, and a UAE local SIM often asks for Emirates ID or residence visa details that a visit visa does not give you.
Compared with Jazz roaming and Holafly
Jazz's own UAE roaming bundles are Rs. 999 + tax for 1 GB over 7 days, and Rs. 4,499 + tax for 5 GB over 30 days. Our UAE 1 GB for 7 days is Rs. 940, and 5 GB for 30 days is Rs. 4,290 — with your Pakistani SIM still in the phone.
Holafly, an international eSIM brand, sells only unlimited plans for Dubai, on du: $27.90 for 7 days (about Rs. 7,750) and $50.50 for 15 days (about Rs. 14,000), with nothing longer than 20 days. You pay in dollars by card, and hotspot sharing is capped at 1 GB a day. Our 3 GB for 30 days is Rs. 2,690.
The biggest difference is on a long stay: the Jazz bundle stops at 30 days and Holafly at 20, while our 10 GB runs for 60 — Rs. 7,990, about what a single week of Holafly costs, for the whole visit visa.
How much data to take
A Dubai trip means more photos, more navigation and more time on social media than most trips.
- 3 to 5 days, light use: 1 GB can do it, but it will be tight.
- 5 to 7 days, normal use — Maps, WhatsApp, photos, some scrolling: 3 GB. This is what most people choose.
- 7 to 14 days, or daily video calls: 5 GB.
- A 60-day visit visa, or a hotspot for the family: 10 GB for 60 days — the Visit Visa Pack.
- A large family, or heavy daily video calling: 20 GB.
One warning: video on Instagram and TikTok burns data faster than anything else — an hour of scrolling can easily take 1 GB. Do that on hotel Wi-Fi.
When to install
Install in Pakistan. Scanning the QR needs a connection, and doing it on congested airport Wi-Fi is slow and frustrating.
The data and validity only start when the eSIM first attaches to a UAE network, which is after you land. Installing a day early is completely safe.
Leave the eSIM switched off until you arrive so it cannot activate by accident in Pakistan, then turn it on as you step off the plane.

Common questions
Does WhatsApp calling work on this eSIM in Dubai?
Not reliably. WhatsApp calling is blocked on UAE networks and we do not promise it will work on this eSIM. Some travellers report it does, but that can change at any time. Install BOTIM, which is licensed in the UAE, for calls home. Messages and voice notes work normally.
How much data do I need for Dubai?
3 GB for a typical 5 to 7 day trip covering Maps, WhatsApp and photos. Take 5 GB if you video call home daily or stay a fortnight. Watching video on Instagram or TikTok burns data quickly — do that on hotel Wi-Fi.
Which plan suits a 60-day visit visa?
The 10 GB Visit Visa Pack, which lasts 60 days. One eSIM covers the whole visa — no new SIM or recharge in the middle.
Will it work in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah too?
Yes. It runs on du, which covers the whole country — Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and the highways between them.
Will my Pakistani number stop working?
No. The eSIM is a second line, so your Pakistani SIM stays in the phone and texts and bank OTPs from home keep arriving.
Is a UAE eSIM worth it for a Dubai stopover?
If you're leaving the airport, yes — a 1 GB plan comfortably covers a long stopover. If you're staying inside the transit lounge, airport Wi-Fi may be enough.
Do I get a UAE phone number with this?
No, this is a data-only eSIM. Calls and messages go through WhatsApp, BOTIM or any app that runs on data. If you specifically need a UAE number, that only comes with a local SIM.
What if my UAE eSIM runs out of data?
Message eJurs on WhatsApp and a new data pack is added to the same eSIM, at its listed price. There is no new eSIM to install and no QR to scan again.
